22.3 Installing Raspberry PI

The following instructions are based on an excellent video produced by James Milne. For
more detailed instructions see
• The first thing that you will need to do is to purchase a Raspberry PI. You can find this on
Amazon.com. You will need to get the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. You can buy this with an
included SSD memory card. You can also purchase it without this card, but if you did
that you would also need to get an SSD card.
• You will need to get the operating system for the Raspberry PI. You can find it on the

and the lite versions. For these instructions we will be using the lite version, as we will
be running "headless". In other words, we will not need be plugging in a HDMI cable,
mouse, or keyboard. We will be running with a "command line" and we won't be using
the "desktop". These instructions are also based on a hard-wire network connection,
not Wi-fi.
• Extract the zip file so that you have the .img file to work with.
• Plug the SSD card into your computer. You will see a prompt to format the card. Cancel
these dialogs. Since this card will not be using a Windows operating system, it does not
require formatting. It will be running a form of Linux. The file systems are not
compatible.
• Download the Etcher software program to "flash" an image to the SSD card. You can
find this file on the
the SSD card, and then select "flash"
