Inspection and Adjustment

Steering Operation

Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position,
and measure the distance the steering wheel can be
turned without moving the front wheels.
ROTATIONAL PLAY: 0 - 10 mm (0 - 0.39 in)
If the play exceeds the service limit, perform rack guide
adjustment (see page 17-16).
If the play is still excessive after rack guide adjustment,
inspect the steering linkage and gearbox (see page
17-14).
Power Assist Check with Vehicle
Parked
1. Check the power steering fluid level (see page 17-16)
and pump belt tension (see page 17-15).
2.
Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steer-
ing wheel from lock-to-lock several times to warm
up the fluid.
3.
Attach a spring scale to the steering wheel. With the
engine idling and the vehicle on a clean, dry floor,
pull the scale as shown. Rotate the steering wheel
more than 90 degree angle by pulling the spring
scale. Read the figure on the spring scale while the
steering wheel is in motion.
4. The scale should read no more then 25 N (2.6 kgf,
5.7 Ibf). If it reads more, go on to step 5.
5.
Stop the engine. Disconnect the sensor inlet hose
from the power steering speed sensor, and plug the
hose and the sensor fitting as shown.
6.
Start the engine, and let it idle.
• If the reading is still more than 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7
Ibf) the power steering speed sensor is OK.
Problem is in the pump or valve body unit (see
General Troubleshooting).
• If the reading is now 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7 Ibf) or less,
power steering speed sensor leaks internally.
Replace the sensor (see page 17-13).
