The Bay Networks Nautica™ series routers are designed to take
advantage of the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
for the transmission of data over digital telephone networks.
ISDN allows the telephone networks to carry data, voice and
video along the same cables.
A Basic Rate Interface (BRI), the usual ISDN implementation,
consists of 2 x 64 Kb/s "B" channels for data and a 16 Kb/s "D"
channel for control information. For more information on the
physical connection to ISDN, refer to the installation manual that
came with your router.
Traffic from network workstations consists of short bursts of
high-volume data with longer periods of little activity. This means
that organizations can be paying for unused time on their 64 Kb/s
leased lines.
The Nautica series routers only open the connection when data is
being passed across the ISDN network and close the connection
when no data is being transmitted. When data is transmitted again
after a period of inactivity, the Nautica router automatically opens
the connection. It does this so quickly that, in most situations, you
will not realize that the connection to the remote unit has been
closed.
