Example of the screw retained lamp socket used on some high mount brake light assemblies
1.
Remove the screws retaining the lamp to the liftgate (Explorer/Mountaineer models) or the cab
(Ranger models).
2.
Pull the lamp away from the vehicle and disconnect the wiring connector.
Some later models retain the lamp socket to the lens with a screw. Remove the screw and pull the lamp
socket away from the lens to access the bulbs.
3.
If there is no retaining screw, remove the lamp socket from the lens by twisting it and pulling
outward.
4.
Pull the bulb straight out from the lamp socket to remove it.
To install:

Install the bulb into the lamp socket.
6.
Install the lamp socket to the lens and either twist it to lock it in position or install its retaining screw.
7.
Position the lens assembly to the body.
8.
Install the lens assembly retaining screws.
9.
Check the operation of the lights.
License Plate Light
Exploded view of the rear license plate light assembly−step bumper shown, other styles are

From underneath the rear of the vehicle, grasp the lamp socket and rotate it
2.
Pull the lamp socket from the lens.
3.
Pull the bulb from the socket
4.
Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
