1. Use the camshaft chain tensioner tool and install it into the RH cylinder head. Access to the
chain tensioner is through the fender well.
2. Rotate the crankshaft one revolution.
3. Position the crankshaft at top dead center of number one cylinder and install the crankshaft
holding tool. The crankshaft holding tool must firmly contact the cylinder block.
4. Position the camshaft timing slots to properly fit the camshaft holding tool and position the
tool on the RH cylinder head. The camshaft timing slots are off−center and below the
center−line of the camshaft.
5. Install the camshaft gear positioning/holding tool on the RH cylinder head.
6. Install the camshaft gear removal tool on the RH cylinder head.
7. Ensure that the bolts on the camshaft gear positioning/holding tool are tight, then tighten the
RH camshaft sprocket bolts to 63 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
8. Remove the camshaft chain tensioner tool.
9. Install the RH hydraulic camshaft tensioner and tighten to 35−39 ft. lbs. (47−53 Nm).
10. Remove the camshaft gear positioning/holding tool, camshaft holding tool and the crankshaft
holding tool.
−96. Install the RH exhaust manifold.
−95. Rasie and safely support the vehicle.
−94. Install the exhaust inlet pipes to the manifolds.
−93. Lower the vehicle.
−92. Install the engine oil dipstick and tube.
−91. Install the crankcase vent separator and the spring clip.
−90. Lubricate the injector o−rings with SAE 50W oil and install them.
−89. Install both valve covers.
−88. Install the fuel injection supply manifold.
−87. Tighten the upper fuel line bracket.
−86. Install the spark plug wires to the plugs.
−85. Install the thermostat housing assembly.
−84. Install the thermostat bypass hose.
−83. Connect both heater hoses to the engine and install the mounting bracket.
−82. Install the EGR valve and connect the supply tube.
−81. Position the engine wiring harness and connect all of the electrical plugs which were removed.
−80. Position both engine accessory brackets to the engine and install the attaching bolts.
−79. Attach the alternator electrical connections.
−78. Install the accessory drive belt, top radiator hose and tube, as well as the engine fan/clutch assembly
and shroud.
−77. Install the lower and upper intake manifolds.
−76. Refill and bleed the cooling system.
−75. Connect the negative battery cable then start and run the engine. Check for leaks.
5.0L Engine
According to the manufacturer, you must use new cylinder head bolts when installing the head(s).
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and
could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in
