Inspect and refacs
the valve sears
whenever the valve

Measure each valve guide J.D. and record it.
SERVICE LIMIT:
5.53 mm
(0.218
in)
Subtract each valve stem 0.0. from the correspond-
ing guide 1.0. to obtain the stem-la-guide clearance.
SERVICE LIMITS: IN : 0.12 mrn (0.005 in)
EX : 0.14 mm (0.006 in)
If the stem-Ie·guide clearance exceeds the service
limit, determine if a new guide with standard
dimensions would bring the clearance within toler-
anea.
If
so,
replace any guides as necessary and ream to
fit.
If the stem-Ie-guide clearance exceeds the service
limit with a new guide, also replace the valve.

Mark new valve guides at the specified height indi- .. - -...
cated below, using a marker. Chill the new valve
guides in a freezer for about an hour.
Heat the cylinder head to 130"C-140°C (275°F-
290
a
F) with a hOI plate or oven. Do not heat the cyl-
inder head beyond 150°C (300"F). Use temperature
indicator sticks, available from welding supply
stores, to be sure the cylinder head is heated to the
proper temperature.
Support the cylinder head and drive the valve
guides out of the cylinder head from the combus-
tion chamber side using the special tool.
TOOL:
Valve guide driver, 5.5 mm 07142·0010100
While the cylinder head is still heated, remove the
new valve guides from the freezer and drive them
into the cylinder head from the rocker arm side until
the exposed height is at the specified value (at the
mark).

VALVE GUIDE PROJECTION:
IN: 14.8 - 15.2 mm (0.58 - 0.60 in)
EX: 17.3 - 17.7 mm (0.68 - 0.70 in )
Let the cylinder head coot to room temperature.
Ream the new valve guides.
Insert the reamer from the combustion chamber
side of the head and always rotate the reamer clock-
wise.

Valve guide reamer, 5.5 mm 07984·2000001 or
07984-2000000

Clean the cylinder head thoroughly to remove any
metal particles after reaming and reface the valve
seat (page 9- 14).
