Overview

Thermo Scientific
The nanoCell is designed to make accurate, reproducible measurements using very small
volumes of solution. The nanoCell is most commonly used to measure the concentrations of
life science samples (DNA, RNA, proteins). The accessory can also be used to measure the
absorbance of any highly concentrated sample such as small molecule pharmaceuticals or dyes
used in the textile industry.
The nanoCell allows you to make quick, easy measurements of microliter samples without
limiting your instrument to only small volume measurements. Simply insert the nanoCell
into the cell holder, load the cell, install the lid, and begin the measurements.
The nanoCell is identical in dimensions to a standard cuvette, and can be used with a single
cell holder. Liquid samples are loaded on the sample loading window at the top of the
accessory and remain there throughout the measurement process.
A schematic of the light path of the nanoCell is shown in
spectrophotometer enters the nanoCell and reaches the sample loading area via an optical
system containing small fiber optic cables. This light passes out the sample loading window,
through the sample, and reflects off a mirror in the lid of the nanoCell. The position of the
mirrored lid relative to the sample loading window defines the pathlength of the accessory.
The lid also helps to prevent rapid evaporation of the sample.
The light that passes through the sample is coupled into a second fiber optic cable and is
launched out of the nanoCell accessory. The absorbance of the solution is measured using the
detector in the spectrophotometer.
