Operation of the Instrument
Optimizing the burner position
1. Touch the Flame tab to display the Flame page.
2. Aspirate the blank solution and when the signal is steady touch the Auto Zero Graph button.
3. Aspirate the standard solution.
4. Adjust the burner position by turning the vertical and horizontal alignment controls
alternately and in small increments while at the same time observing the continuous graphics
display. Continue to make adjustments until you find the position that gives maximum
absorbance reading.
Optimizing the nebulizer
In this procedure you optimize the nebulizer aspiration rate for the solutions you will use in the
subsequent analyses.
WARNING
1. Aspirate the standard solution.
2. Turn the nebulizer adjusting nut slowly in very small increments while at the same time
observing the continuous graphics display. Adjust the regulator to give the maximum
absorbance reading.
NOTE: You should not need to move the adjusting nut very much to obtain the maximum reading if the
nebulizer was correctly preadjusted.
6-40
Warning: Flashback Hazard
When you optimize the nebulizer using a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame:
Make small adjustments slowly. Do not rotate the adjusting nut more than 1/8
of a turn in total.
