Optimizing the gas flows
The oxidant-to-fuel ratio affects the sensitivity of the analyses, although the magnitude of the
effect varies between elements. Generally you adjust the gas flow rates to give maximum
absorbance for the analyte element.
Some elements require an oxidizing air-acetylene flame (blue, fuel-lean, hot) and some require a
reducing flame (yellow, fuel-rich, and relatively cool).
