Step 5 Compare with a known good vehicle, is the noise the same?

Replace the generator.

Step 7 Replace the drive belt or the drive belt tensioner.

(a) Shut down the engine.
(b) Remove the drive belt.
(c) Rotate the generator pulley by hand.
Does the generator rotate smoothly without catching and
grinding noise?
Go to step 6
Yes
Remove and install the generator. Tighten the generator retaining
bolts to the specified torque. Refer to
Replacement. Start the engine, does the noise disappear?
System normal
Yes
Go to step 7

Important Note
If a clear generator fault has not been found, make sure that all
other possible noise sources have been excluded and then replace
the generator.
If the noise is part of the normal generator characteristics, after
replacing generator the noise will not disappear.
