Caution
A ground lead resistance of > 0.99 on the HIL cable can cause a breakdown
in HIL communication, with the result that alarm signals are not transmitted
to the Displays. The following instructions must be observed when installing
HP-HIL cables:
If possible, do not cut and re-terminate long HP-HIL cables.
If cables must be cut, then re-terminate carefully: A poor termination will
increase cable resistance.
Do not use more than 30m of HIL cable. The cable between the extenders
MUST NOT exceed 25m.
Use all three ground leads when making the ground connection to the
extender box.

Use shrink tubing from step one to cover outer shield.
Slip 9.5 cm (3 314 I') shrink tubing 0890-0273 over end of cable. It will be used later to cover
outer shield and jacket.
Strip jacket 3.2 cm (1 l/4 "). Be careful not to damage the outer shield.
Twist and fold back outer shield.
Remove filler strips, if present.
Solder a wire lead to shield. Use wire from excess cable or another 20 AWG lead.
Strip leads 5 mm (3/16 ") and twist conductor strands tightly.
Using one of the Amp crimping tools (90312-l from Amp-USA, or 169341-1 from
Amp-Europe), crimp pins to leads. Use slot 28-26 on the Amp-USA tool or appropriate
slot on the Amp-Europe tool. Crimped contacts should overlap insulation. Refer to Amp
documentation in the appendix at the end of this chapter for crimping instructions.
