CAUTION
!
Do not change the steering gear preload
adjustment before moving the inner tie rod
from the steering gear. Changing the steering
gear preload adjustment before moving the
inner tie rod could result in damage to the
pinion and the steering gear.
3. Bend the tabs to release the retaining washer (1).
CAUTION
!
Refer to "Pipe Wrench Positioning Notice: ".
4. Place a pipe wrench on the rack next to the steering
linkage inner tie rod housing (2).
5. Place a wrench on the flats of the steering linkage
inner tie rod housing (2).
6. Rotate the steering linkage inner tie rod housing (2)
counterclockwise while holding the rack stationary
until the steering gear inner tie rod separates from
the rack.
7. Remove and discard the retaining washer (1).
Assembly Procedure
1. Position the NEW retaining washer (1).
2. Attach the steering linkage inner tie rod onto the
rack.
CAUTION
!
Refer to "Pipe Wrench Positioning Notice: ".
3. Place a pipe wrench on the rack next to the steering
linkage inner tie rod housing (2).
CAUTION
!
Refer to "Fastener Notice: ".
Power Assisted Steering System:
4. Place a torque wrench and OTC 09922-10010-01
Inner Tie Rod Wrench on the flats of the steering
linkage inner tie rod housing (2).
Tightening torque
Tighten to 78 N⋅m (58 lb ft).
5. Bend the tabs over on the retaining washer (1) to
secure it.
6. Install the steering gear boot. Refer to "Steering
Gear Boot Replacement - Off Vehicle".
Steering Gear Cylinder Pipe Assembly and
Seals Replacement - Off Vehicle
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the steering gear pipe fittings (2) from
the steering gear housing and remove the steering
gear pipe (1). Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
2. Disconnect the steering gear pipe fittings (2) from
the gear housing and remove the steering gear pipe
(1). Remove and discard the O-ring seals.
