Chapter 2 — Library Installation
Location and Rack-mounting—Ensure that you follow these guidelines.
Location
Ensure that the installation location is properly prepared and has adequate clearance
for ventilation, minimal dust and debris, and proximity to an appropriate AC power
source.
WARNING! The maximum ambient temperature of the library is 95 ˚F. Ensure that you
select a location where the air vents at the front of the library and the fans at the back
of the library are not blocked. The library requires clear airflow to stay properly
cooled.
Rack-
If you plan to rack-mount the library, make sure that an appropriate rack is assembled
mounted
and placed near the AC power outlets and network connections.
Caution:
tile. Do not place the rack on a carpeted floor or anywhere else that poses risk for
static discharge that could damage your library and its tape drives.
least 43 inches (110 cm) deep is recommended.
(30.8 cm) at the front for the Access port.
Note: The use of two-post racks is not supported.
Tabletop
If you plan to place the library on a tabletop or desk, make sure that the surface is level
and sturdy enough to support the fully loaded library.
Host and Interface—Prepare the host computer(s) that will connect to the library following these
guidelines.
HBA
Install a suitably rated host bus adapter (HBA) in each host computer.
SCSI—For optimum performance, use an Ultra160 or Ultra320 LVD SCSI host bus
adapter. Do connect Disk and Tape devices to the SAME controller. Disk and tape
devices must be on a different controller or different ports on the same controller.
With LTO-4 tape drives it is recommend that each drive be on its own controller.
Daisy chaining LTO-4 is not recommended (see
page 45
Fibre Channel—The Fibre Channel tape drives support 4GB Fibre Channel
connections. Although a 2GB Fibre Channel controller can be used, for optimum
performance, a 4GB Fibre Channel controller is recommended.
LUN support
Make sure that multiple LUN support is enabled on the LVD SCSI HBA. Some HBAs
do not support multiple LUNs and cannot be used with the library. Do not use a SCSI
RAID controller with the tape library or tape drives or verify RAID support can be
disabled on the SCSI HBA.
