Chapter 12 — Library and Tape Drive Firmware

The tape drives in the library may occasionally require firmware updates.
When they do, Spectra Logic will send you information on when and how
to update the tape drives. To ensure that updated tape drive firmware has
been properly tested for use in the library, Spectra Logic recommends that
you only update tape drive firmware when you receive a notification from
Spectra Logic.
Before upgrading drive firmware, make sure that your library is idle and that the

tape drive does not contain a tape (loaded or ejected). Attempting to update the
firmware while the library is busy or while a tape is in the tape drive will result in
the upgrade failing and may result in failed backup jobs.
If you previously attempted to upgrade drive's firmware with media loaded, unload
the tapes, and retry the operation.
Follow these steps to upgrade the drive firmware for any LTO-4 drives in
the library.

b. Copy the firmware to a network location that can be accessed by the
library's tape drives.
c. Use the IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool (ITDT) to update the drive
firmware. You can download ITDT directly from www.ibm.com.
Once you are on IBM's web site, search for Tape Diagnostic Tool to
locate and download the software and the user guide.
Note: If you cannot use ITDT to update the drive firmware, request a
firmware tape from Spectra Logic and load it into the drive.
