Chapter 8 — Media Lifecycle Management
Spectra Logic Memory Chip Data Media Lifecycle Management starts with
packaged, bar-coded, Spectra Logic Certified Media (LTO-3 and LTO-4)
and MLM LTO cleaning cartridges from Spectra Logic. Before shipment,
Spectra Logic writes baseline data, including its bar code information and
the date on which the media was certified, to the memory chip embedded
in each cartridge. Throughout its life, the cartridge continually collects data
on its memory chip. Whenever a drive unloads a cartridge, the drive writes
information about the tape to the cartridge memory chip.
Media Lifecycle Management Database The BlueScale Media Lifecycle
Management feature uses the information from the cartridge memory chip
and the cartridge bar code to maintain a database of information about
each cartridge in the library. This database includes information about the
cartridge manufacturer, as well as statistical information about the
cartridge age, how many times it has been loaded and into which drives,
and how many errors it has accumulated. It also records when the
cartridge is exported from the library and by whom.

Certified Cleaning Cartridges With MLM-capable Certified tape cleaning
cartridges, BlueScale MLM tracks the number of times a cleaning cartridge
is used. Cleaning cartridges have a limited number of uses. You can
configure BlueScale MLM to notify you when a cleaning cartridge is
approaching its maximum number of uses, so that you can have another on
hand to replace it.
