Appendix C — Specifications
The BlueScale Encryption and key management interface support for LTO-
4 tape drive encryption is documented in the Spectra Logic BlueScale
Encryption User Guide. If you choose not to use BlueScale key management
with LTO-4 encryption, you can only take advantage of LTO-4 drive-based
encryption using a key management application that supports LTO-4
encryption (if any are available) that runs on a separate host.
LTO-4 drive-based encryption highlights:
LTO-4 Fibre Channel WWN Naming Conventions
The World Wide Node Name (WWNN) and World Wide Port Name
(WWPN) identify a Fibre Channel tape drive and its Fibre Channel ports
respectively on a Fibre Channel network. The WWNN and WWPN are each
a sequence of eight, two-digit hexadecimal numbers generated by the library.

User Guide
Key: AES-256 data encryption with a secret 256-bit encryption key,
used to encrypt and decrypt data. The key is not retrievable from the
encryption core and is automatically erased during the unload process;
software is required to extract the key, keep it secure, and provide
management tools to track, store, use, and delete keys as appropriate.
Speed: The LTO-4 tape drive encrypts data only after the host data is
received and compressed. Data is encrypted at full line speed in
hardware in the tape drive, so it has no effect on tape drive
performance.
Verification: To confirm that data is encrypted properly during write
operations, the tape drive automatically decrypts after encrypting to
provide on-the-fly checking that data is in fact encrypted correctly.
Compatibility: If you choose not to use drive-based encryption, you
can take advantage of the tape drive's backward read/write capabilities:
a non-encryption LTO-4 tape drive can read LTO-2 and LTO-3 media,
and can write to LTO-3 media.
The LTO-4 drives numbers are as follows...
The WWNN for LTO-4 drives uses the form 21:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx, where:
w = the drive number
xx:xx = a unique serial number
The WWPN for LTO-4 drives uses the form 2
y = the port number
w = the drive number
xx:xx = a unique serial number
Set the value for Port B by copying the value for Port A and changing the value
of the second digit in the first pair of hexadecimal numbers from 1 to 2.
For example:
WWPN for Port A = 2
1
WWPN for Port B =
2
y
:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx.
2
:1w:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx
w
:1
:00:90:A5:00:xx:xx, where:
