After you enable Media Lifecycle Management (see

media and cleaning cartridges into the library, BlueScale MLM writes the
cartridge bar code information and other information about the library to
the cartridge's memory chip and to the library's MLM database the first
time the cartridge is loaded and then unloaded from a drive. You can then
use BlueScale MLM to monitor the health of the cartridges and generate a
variety reports. If desired, you can save the reports to a USB key or email
them to a previously configured mail user.

Regularly back up your MLM database. Determine how frequently to
export the MLM database to a USB key for storage. The database can be
loaded back into the library from the USB key in the event of an error.

Note: Backing up the MLM database produces a point-in-time
snapshot of the MLM database. If you load and unload large
numbers of tape over a short period of time, the backup may not
reflect all of the changes to the MLM database. Based on your
environment, determine how frequently backups are needed to
ensure that you can easily restore the MLM database.

ANAGEMENT
Note: Until a cartridge is loaded into a tape drive in the library the first
time, it does not appear on the Media Lifecycle Management
reports.
If a new cartridge is write-protected when it is inserted into a
drive, the library cannot update the information on the
cartridge's memory chip.
