RAP 2.49 Book Thickness Sensor

Input "Analog"
The book thickness sensor measures the thick-
ness of books as they travel along the internal
infeed conveyor toward the gripper. The trim-
mer uses this information to automatically adjust
settings that are dependent upon the thickness
of each book, such as jogging force, gripper
speed, and rotation speed.
The sensor is mounted above the internal infeed
conveyor (Figure 2-74).
Possible Fault Indicators
"Book Thickness Error" message
is displayed.
"Book at Thickness Sensor Un-
expectedly" message is displayed.
The left jogger does not automatically
adjust its jogging force according to
book thickness.
Initial Actions
Check for loose or damaged wires 12, 28, and
98 at the electrical panel.
Procedure
1. Switch the main power ON. Make sure the
book thickness sensor is not obstructed.
Does the book thickness sensor cast a red
light onto the internal infeed conveyor?

N
Is there 15VDC between wires 12 and 98 at
the DI/HS PWB (Figure 2-75)?
Y
N
Is there 24VDC between wires 73 and
74 at the DI/HS PWB?

Go to RAP 2.5 DC Power.
Disconnect power and replace the
DI/HS PWB (REP 4.25 DI/HS PWB Re-
placement).
Check for loose or damaged wires 12 and
98. If red light on sensor still does not come
on, replace book thickness sensor (PL 5.11
Main Assembly 59000 (11/14)).
2. Make sure the book thickness sensor is not
obstructed. Go to the diagnostic screen (GP
6.2 Input/Output Diagnostics). Look at the
thickness sensor slide bar. Is the bar all the
way at the bottom?

Disconnect wire 28. On the diagnostic
screen does the book thickness sensor slide
bar move to the bottom?
Y
N
Disconnect power and replace the main
PWB (REP 4.23 Main PWB Replace-
ment).
Reinitialize the sensor (GP 6.8 Optical Dis-
tance Sensor) and replace if faulty (PL 5.17
Power Panel EE-3503 (2/2)).
3. Wave an object or your hand under the book
thickness sensor. Does the slide bar move
up and down?

Reinitialize the sensor (GP 6.8 Optical Dis-
tance Sensor) and replace if faulty (PL 5.17
Power Panel EE-3503 (2/2)).
Repair complete.
