REP 4.11 Oil / Filter Change

The hydraulic oil and filter should be changed
annually, or more often in high-use locations.
WARNING
Disconnect and lockout power as described
in the Power Lockout Procedure on page ix.
CAUTION
The hydraulic oil must be cool when changing.
Severe burns may result from changing hot oil.
Initial Actions
The Oil Change Kit, K-56040, should be ordered
before performing the oil change. Instructions
are provided within this kit. The procedure is
also provided here for reference purposes.
The Oil Change Tool Kit, K-56031, includes all
the tools needed to perform the oil and filter
change.
Procedure
1. Switch the main power OFF and lockout
power to the machine.
2. Disconnect and set aside any infeed acces-
sories.
3. Remove the lower left door panel.
4. Remove the filler/breather cap from the top
of the reservoir.
5. Assemble the transfer pump included in the
oil change kit K-56031.
a. Firmly connect the hand drill to the
pump shaft using the chuck key at-
tached to the drill.
b. Cut the single 8 foot hose into two
pieces, the first long enough to reach

from the tank to the pump, the second
long enough to reach from the pump to
the empty shipping container.
c. Connect one end of each hose to each
fitting on the pump.
d. Select the appropriate direction of rota-
tion on the drill in order to transfer oil
from the reservoir to the empty con-
tainer.
6. Empty the contents of the shipping con-
tainer.
7. Insert the suction hose into the filler/breather
hole and pump used oil from the hydraulic
reservoir to the empty shipping container.
8. Re-fill the reservoir with the new oil using
the transfer pump. Use only ISO (Interna-
tional Standards Organization) Viscosity
Grade 46, rust, oxidation, and foam inhibit-
ing, non-detergent hydraulic oil. Oils other
than the recommended type will cause
seals, cups, and O-rings to deteriorate.
NEVER USE Automatic transmission oil
or brake fluid as a substitute! The proper
hydraulic oil can be purchased in 5 gallon
containers from your authorized Challenge
Dealer using the Challenge part number: S-
1991-3
9. Reinstall the filler/breather cap.
10. Place the drip pan underneath the oil filter.
11. Remove the oil filter and allow the oil from
the filler head to drain into the drip pan.
12. Install the new filter.
Note: Rub a few drops of oil onto the o-ring seal
of the filter before installing. Install with firm
hand force.
13. Pour the oil from the filter and the drip pan
into the container holding the used oil.

14. Seal the oil filter in the oil filter container.
15. Transfer the used oil from the larger con-
tainer into the smaller container using the
transfer pump.
16. Seal the smaller container.
17. Place the smaller container and the oil filter
container into the larger container.
18. Seal and return the larger container for dis-
posal.
19. Replace door panel and accessories.
