RAP 2.24 Knife Shift Cylinders

Output 21
The knife shift cylinders shift the knife bar as-
sembly from one side to another, allowing the
knife to cut toward the book spine on every cut.
The cylinders are mounted to the knife bar.
Possible Fault Indicators
"Knife Position Error!" mes-
sage is displayed at the console.
Knife fails to move into proper position
prior to each cut.
Initial Actions
Perform RAP 2.20 Pneumatic Pressure.
Perform GP 6.14 Speed-Control Air Valves.
Check for air leaks and disconnected or pinched
hoses.
Check for loose or damaged wire 62 at the elec-
trical panel.
Check that the cable connector on valve #5 is
connected properly.
Procedure
1. Open the rear door and fully open the flow
control valves pertaining to the knife shift
cylinders (Figure 2-32).
2. Switch the main air ON and main power ON.
3. Manually activate valve #5 by pressing the
actuator button on the valve (Figure 2-33).
Do the cylinders extend?
Y
N
Disconnect power and air, then replace
valve #5 (PL 5.22 Pneu. Manifold Asm.
59012-1).

4. Electrically activate valve #5 by shorting wire
62 to wire 74. Does the pusher extend?
Y
N
Disconnect power and air to replace valve
#5 (PL 5.22 Pneu. Manifold Asm. 59012-1).
5. Disconnect power and replace the main
PWB (REP 4.23 Main PWB Replacement).
6. Readjust the flow control valves to slow the
movement of the knife bar in each direction
slightly (GP 6.14 Speed-Control Air Valves).
Be careful not to over-restrict the flow be-
cause it will cause erratic travel of the knife
bar.
