ADJ 4.6 Squaring Adjustment

It may be necessary to make a squaring adjust-
ment to the gripper assembly if books are con-
sistently trimmed out-of-square.
Initial Actions
Obtain or cut a few books that are approximately
8-1/2" wide X 11" tall (210 mm X 279 mm). For
best results, use books that have sides that are
cut squarely to the spine, and with good quality
spines that are straight, not twisted, and perpen-
dicular to the rest of the book.
Procedure
1. Switch the main power ON and press the
green start button to initialize the trimmer.
2. Edit or create a job with the following job
settings then run the job:
Finish Width: 8.000 (203 mm)
Finish Length: 10.500 (267 mm)
Bottom Trim: 0.250 (6 mm)
Thickness: Auto
Start Width: Auto
Cut Options: Face and Side On
Jogger Options: Extend
Book Stack Number: One Book
Finish Cut: Off
Face Jog: On
3. Hand feed a single book into the machine to
trim it. Repeat this with 2 or more additional
books.
4. Using a precise measuring instrument such
as Vernier calipers, measure the top and
bottom of the books as shown in Figure
4-16. When measuring a book, make sure
to measure it in the same orientation that it
was cut inside the machine.

5. If the measurements vary from book to
book, repeat steps 1 and 2 until the meas-
urements are the same for all books. It may
be necessary to find different/better books.
6. Subtract dimension A from dimension B, (B-
A). If the result is positive, the adjustment
screw will need to be turned counter-clock-
wise. If the result is negative, the screw will
need to be turned clockwise.
7. To make the adjustment, Switch the main
power OFF and the main air OFF. Remove
the lower front cover.
8. Loosen the jam nut on the locking set screw
and loosen the locking set screw as shown
in Figure 4-17. Turn the adjustment screw
by the amount corresponding to the closest
value listed in the following table (in the di-
rection determined in step 4).
# of Adjustment
Compensation for
Screw Turns
0.172" (4.37 mm)
1
0.086" (2.18 mm)
1/2
0.043" (1.09 mm)
1/4
0.022" (0.56 mm)
1/8
0.014" (0.36 mm)
1/12
Example: If (B-A)= -0.086", turn the adjustment
screw 1/2 turn clockwise.
Note: All of the turns and distances in the table
above are based on a book size of 8" wide X 10-
1/2" high (203 mm X 267 mm). If the book size
is different from that, the number of turns versus
compensation will be less accurate.
9. Tighten the locking set screw and jam nut.
10. Switch the main air ON and the main power
ON.
