Argument Description

Speciﬁes what a ﬁlter does when all of its criteria match a

packet. You can specify any combination of actions. Possible

actions are:

Discards the packet. Discarding is done after any syslog, icmp,

or netact actions are taken.

Discards the packet and sends an ICMP destination

unreachable message.

If the link is quiescent, netact discards the packet.

Used only with dynamic dial-out networking. If used in an

include ﬁlter, the no_start ﬁlter action speciﬁes that trafﬁc

deﬁned as activity on the speciﬁed interface will not activate a

dynamic dial-out line. However, the ﬁlter action will keep the

line up if it is already up–that is, if it is not quiescent. In the

process, the action resets the net_inactivity timer to 0. See

Dial-up Networking, starting on page A11-1, for information

on dynamic dialing.

Logs the event in the system log ﬁle.

NOTE: Filters that would cause multiple syslog, icmp, and netact

actions for the same interface are reduced to a single syslog, icmp, or

netact action. To add a dynamic dial-out ﬁlter, conﬁgure the %dialout

section of the Model 5390 conﬁguration ﬁle; you cannot add the ﬁlter

using the ﬁlter command (see Creating dialout Entries in the Conﬁgu-

ration File on page A14-37).
