Cleaning Partitions

Cleaning partitions provide permanent storage for cleaning cartridges
inside the library when using the Automatic Drive Cleaning option (see
Automatic Drive Cleaning on page
Cleaning support by purchasing an activation key from Spectra Logic.
These special-purpose partitions do not have an entry/exit pool or any
drives associates with them. The library uses the cleaning cartridges stored
in the cleaning partitions to automatically clean a drive whenever it is
necessary. A cleaning partition can be associated with any data partition in
the library that has a drive type that is compatible with the cleaning
cartridges in the cleaning partition.
The cleaning cartridges are imported into and exported from cleaning
partition through the TAP in the same way that data cartridges are. They
are identified with a standard CLN prefix on the bar code labels and stored
in TeraPack magazines with a CL prefix on their bar code labels. The
library automatically prevents importing cleaning cartridges and
magazines that are not properly identified into a cleaning partition.
Cleaning partitions are not accessible to the application software that uses
the media in the data partitions. This means that software-initiated drive
cleaning operations cannot use the cleaning cartridges in the cleaning
partition. The chambers used for the cleaning partition are enabled by the
Automatic Drive Cleaning option key and do not decrease the number of
licensed chambers in the library (unless the maximum number of
chambers in the library are already licensed).

Increased drive availability due to the fact that all drives are available to
all backup processes. For example, if a library has six drives and one
partition, data can be shared across all drives, speeding data backup. If
the same library is split into two partitions, some drives may be left idle
in one partition, while the others are used for a backup process running
in another partition.
