7 — EPON ONT overview

ONT ID method

The EPON ONT allows for configuration of the ONT ID method that can be used at
both the system and ONT levels for planning and security purposes. The ONT level
ONT ID method takes higher priority than the system level ONT ID method. The
operator can configure whether the OLT will provide the MAC address or the
LOGICAL ID as the ONT ID in DHCP option 82 or PPPoE relay tag.
When the MAC address is used for ONT authentication, the service configuration is
retained to simplify and improve the process of ONT replacement.

ONT authentication on the PON

As required in the EPON equipment technical requirement specifications R2.1, the
following authentication modes are supported for the EPON ONT.
physical ID (MAC-based) authentication
In EPON deployments, the physical ID refers to the MAC address of the ONT.
This authentication mode requires that the OLT has the ability to verify the MAC
address of the ONT as per IEEE 802.3-2005.
logical ID authentication
In release 2.4.30, the logical ID can either be the ONT ID, a password, or the
combination of ONT ID and password. It is recommended that the latter be
implemented through extended OAM.
mixed-based authentication
This mode allows the OLT to authenticate an ONT using the physical ID or the
logical ID. If the physical ID authentication fails, the OLT then checks the logical
ID. This mode creates two additional ways to authenticate an ONT: MAC address
plus ONT ID and MAC address plus password.
