PISTON/CONNECTING ROO REMOVAL
SIDE CLEARANCE INSPECTION
Separate the engine case (Page 10-9).
Check connecting rod side clearance.
SERVICE LIMIT: 0.40
mm
(0,016
in)
If clearance exceeds the service limit, replace the
rod.
Recheck and if still out of limit, replace the crank-
shaft.
Inspect the crankshaft for rough spots or damage.

If you have the Piston Pin Dis/Assembly Tool
Set
(07973-6570002)
for
GL1000 and
GL1100, replace its parts with a Piston Pin
Dis/Assembly Tool Kit (07973-MG90100)
forGL1200.
The Piston Pin Dis/Assembly Tool Kit consists
of the following parts.
Pilot driver
Pilot collar
Piston base
Piston pin guide
Remove the left side rods and pistons. Mark them to
indicate the correct cylinder (No.2 and 4) and posi-
tion on the crank pins.
Remove the right side rods and pistons. Mark them
to indicate the correct cylinder {No.1 and 3} and
position on the crank pins.
CAUTION:
Failure to align the piston correctly could
result in piston damage.
Do not reuse the piston pin whenever dis-
assembled.
Inspect the piston slldmg surfaces for abnormal
wear or damage.
Remove the piston pin using the piston pin dis/
assembly tool set.
CAUTION:
On engines with high mileage, inspect the
cylinders for a ridge just above the highest
point of ring travel. Any ridge must be
reo
moved with an automotive type ridge reamer
before removing the right side pistollS to
allow the pistons and n'ngs to pass through the
cylinder.
