SELF-PROPELLED
GENERATOR SET, SPEC. NO. 5381A
(3) Stopping the vehicle
Stopping the self-propelled unit is not exactly the same as stopping an automo-
bile or truck.
Because of the great force of inertia built up in the generator
rotor, engine compression has no braking effect on the engine when the accelera-
tor is released. In fact, a sensation of acceleration may be felt.
To stop the
vehicle:
(a) ALWAYS DEPRESS the clutch pedal before applying brakes. Thus, the
brakes do not need to slow the rapidly turning rotor in addition to
stopping the vehicle .
b) Apply b
ra
k
es smoothly, and avoid sudden stops, except in case of
EMERGENCY.
(c) If the vehicle is to be parked, place the gearshift lever in NEUTRAL
position and apply parking brake.
(d) Place engine control switch in OFF position to stop the engine.
E.
Preparation for Power Delivery (Normal Automatic Voltage Control)
The following are power delivery preparation procedures to be followed after the
engine is started.
(1) Check and position switches and controls (see Fig. 1)
(a) Loosen fasteners and pull generator control tray (14) outward. Place
automatic-manual switch (33) in AUTOMATIC
position.
Close tray
and secure.
(b) Loosen fasteners and pull protective relay tray (15) outward. Place
test-bank switch (40) in OFF position if the aircraft being serviced
is equipped with 28.5-V DC interlock relay system. (If not, place
in ON position .) Slide tray in and secure.
(c) Meter switch (34) may be in any position except pointing straight
DOWN.
F.
Power Delivery (Automatic Voltage Control)
(1) Place operating mode switch (20, Fig. 1) in GEN position.
The electric-
hydraulic governor will immediately increase engine speed to 2400 RPM and
maintain it.
