For operation at temperatures consistently below -10 deg F (-23 deg
C), refer to Arctic Oil Recommendations in the Cummins Operation and
Ma in ten an ce Man ua I .
(4) Changing engine oil
Oil should be changed after each 200 hours of engine operation. The
generator set is equipped with an hourmeter to record actual engine
operating time. The ideal time to change engine oil is soon after a
power de I ivery "run ", when the engine is at operating temperature.
NOTE: If lubricating oil is drained immediately after the unit
has been run for some time, most of the sediment wil I be
in suspension and will drain readily.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE SOLVENTS AS FLUSHING OILS IN
RUNNING ENGINES.
Change the oil filter element each time the oil is changed,
Change oil as follows:
(a) Provide a container for catching used oil. Capacity must be greater
than 24 quarts.
(b) Remove drain plug located in oil pan.
(c) Whileoil is draining, proceed to change the oil filter element. See
Para. 2, D, (5) bel ow, for instructions.
(d) Clean the drain plug and install when engine oil has drained. Torque
the drain plug to 35 to 40 foot-pounds.
(e) Remove oil filler cap (Ref. l-2, Fig. 1). Turn locking screw handle
counterclockwise to loosen cap and lift straight up. Refill the crank-
case with new, clean oil which meets engine manufacturer's recommenda-
tions. (See Para. 2, D, (2) b a ove, or Cummins Operation and Maintenance
Manual .)
Engine oil capacity is as follows:
24 quarts including filter
20 quarts oil pan capacity
