Cleaning
(1)
Steam cleaning
of generator
components
is no longer recommended,
because
steam and harsh cleaning
compounds can be damaging to insulation
and can
cause short circuiting.
Use a good,
SAFE,
commercial
cleaner
on al I parts
except
bearings.
CAUTION:
DRY ALL
PARTS
THOROUGHLY
AFTER
CLEANING.
WARN
IN G:
DO NOT
USE A FLAMMABLE
SOLVENT.
(2)
Wipe
bearings clean with
a dry cloth.
Sealed bearings
must NOT
be washed.
A little
tarnish,
stain,
or corrosion
on the outside surfaces
are not detrimental
to the operation
of the bearing and need not be removed.

Inspection
(1)
Bearings
Inspect bearings while
they are mounted on the shaft.
(a)
Inspect the bearings for evidence
of physical
damage, such as cracks,
nicks,
damaged seals,
etc.
Inspect for evidence
of overheating.
Overheated
bear-
ings are generally
darkened to a brownish
blue or blue-black
color.
Re-
place the bearing
if damaged in any way or if it shows evidence
of over-
heating.
(b)
Check the be aring for excessive
looseness between the races and the bear-
ing balls.
(c)
Turn
the outer race slowly
and check for any roughness
or sudden stopping.
Repeat the check while
turning
the race in the opposite
direction.
The
outer race should rotate smoothly
and without
catching.
Replace the
bearing
if rough or catching.
(d)
Even
if no defects
are found,
or suspected,
the age and service
of the
bearing should be considered
before passing it for further
service.
If the
hourmeter
indicates
the bearing has been in operational
service
approxi-
mately 5000 hours,
or more,
it should be replaced.
The age of the
bearing should also be considered
because the lubricating
capability
of
bearing grease over five years old is questionable.
