New
bearings must be heated to 100 deg. C. (212
deg.
F.)
prior to
installation.
Time may be saved if the bearings are placed in a
thermostatically
control led oven approximate ly 20 minutes
prior to
scheduled
assembly.
Set the thermostat
at 100 deg. C.
(1)
Make certain
the stator housing
is blocked and cannot roll.
Make certain
the
rotor shaft
is clean.
Apply a thin coating
of oil to the bearing seats.
NOTE:
(a) Before removing
bearings from oven,
remember that the larger
bearing goes on the front
(drive) end of the shaft and the
smaller
bearing goes on the rear (exciter)
end.
Also remember
that the snap ring of a bearing goes on FIRST,
toward the
windings.
(b) Position
the two generator
rotor-to-exciter
leads in the shaft
keyway so the rear bearing will
slide OVER
them.
(2)
Use HEAVY
LEATHER
GLOVES
to remove bearings from oven and install
them
on rotor shaft.
When properly
heated,
they will
slide easily
into place with
little
or no forcing.

Allow
bearings to cool to room temperature
before installing
housings.
Use a hoist and a strong V-belt
looped over each end of the shaft to position
the rotor as shown in Figure
10.
Lift
the drive end of the rotor to a position
about even with the center
of the
stator.
Extend
a steel pipe into the stator
housing and onto the exciter
end of the
rotor shaft as shown in Figure
9.
Lift
the exciter
end with
the pipe.
Guide
and pull the rotor
into the stator.
Connect
a hoist to front
bearing bracket
(16,
Fig.
7).
Clean and lubricate
the bearing seat in the housing hub and lubricate
the bearing outer race.
Position
the bracket on the shaft and bearing.
Use cap screws which are longer
than those used for housing attachment
to pull the housing onto the bearing.
Remove long screws when they
"bottom"
and use regular
size,
slotted
attaching
screws to complete
installation
and secure bracket to stator.
