Install
spring (8) and plate (7).
Remove new element
from transparent
bag and install
element
(6) in housing
(10).
Inspect gasket (4).
Replace
if necessary.
Inspect upper aliminum
plate (5).
Install
cover (3) and gasket (4) and secure with capscrews (1) and lock-
washers (2).
NOTE:
Tighten
screws
alternately
and evenly
so that the cover and
gasket will
seat perfectly
on the housing.
Install
drain plug (11) and open shut-off
valves
in drain and inlet
lines.
Check coolant
level
in radiator.

Thermostat
The thermostat
should be checked each fall,
or "as required".
Refer to Cummins
Operation
and Maintenance
Manual
for recommended test instructions.
6.
Battery
Service
A.
General
Twelve-volt
DC power is supplied
by two pairs of 6-V
batteries
(four batteries
used).
Each pair is connected
in series to produce 12-V
DC.
The two pairs are
connected
in parallel
to provide
maximum amperage for engine cranking.
The
12-V
DC system provides
power for operation
of the engine electrical
system,
governor
system,
400-Hz
generator
protective
relay system,
and all DC lights
on the unit.
B. ' Battery
Location
and Accessibility
Batteries
are mounted on a support tray located
in the body cn the left side of the
vehicle,
just to the rear of the left,
front
fender
(see Fig.
15).
They are easily
accessible,
by loosening
two screw type fasteners
and opening two hinged access
doors.
Open the left door first.

Battery
Care
(1)
Never
allow
a battery,
which
has been removed
from the vehicle,
to sit on
concrete,
ground,
or metal unless proper insulation
is provided.
A wooden
platform
or board will
provTde sufficient
insulation.
