Drain the Fuel Filter/ Water
Separator - Diesel Models
Proper maintenance of the fuel filter/water
separator is essential for good engine
performance. Failure to perform this procedure can
lead to poor engine performance and component
damage.
Explosion and fire hazard. Engine
fuels are combustible. Perform this
procedure in an open, well-
ventilated area away from heaters,
sparks, flames and lighted
tobacco. Always have an
approved fire extinguisher within
easy reach.
Perform this procedure with the
engine off.
Perkins Models:
1 Open the engine side turntable cover and locate
the fuel filter/water separator.

Section 4 • Scheduled Maintenance Procedures
2 Loosen the vent plug located on the fuel filter/
water separator head.

3 Loosen the drain plug located at the bottom of
the bowl. Allow the water to drain into a suitable
container until fuel starts to come out.
Immediately tighten the drain plug.
4 Tighten the vent plug.

If the fuel filter/water separator is
completely drained, you must
prime the fuel filter/water
separator before starting the
engine. Refer to C-4 in this
section, Replace The Fuel Filter
Element - Perkins Diesel Models,
for instructions on how to prime
the fuel filter/water separator.
