2WD STEERING AXLE COMPONENTS
How to Remove the
Hub and Bearings
1 Loosen the wheel lug nuts. Do not remove
them.
2 Block the non-steering wheels. Center a lifting
jack under the steering axle.
3 Raise the machine approximately 6 inches
(15 cm) and place blocks under the chassis for
support.
4 Remove the lug nuts, then remove the tire
and wheel assembly.
5 Remove the dust cap, cotter pin and
castle nut.
Always use a new cotter pin when
installing a castle nut.
6 Pull the hub off the yoke spindle. The washer
and outer bearing should fall loose from the
hub.
7 Place the hub on a flat surface and gently pry
the bearing seal out of the hub. Remove the
rear bearing.
Always install a new bearing seal
when removing a hub.

How to Install the
Hub and Bearings
1 Be sure that both bearings are packed
with clean, fresh grease.
2 Place the large inner bearing into the rear
of the hub.
3 Press the bearing seal evenly into the hub
until it is flush.
4 Slide the hub onto the yoke spindle.
5 Place the outer bearing into the hub.
6 Install the washer and castle nut.
7 Torque the castle nut to 35 ft-lbs (47 Nm)
to seat the bearings.
8 Loosen the castle nut, then torque the castle
nut to 8 ft-lbs (11 Nm).
9 Install a new cotter pin. Bend the cotter pin
to lock it.
10 Install the dust cap, then the tire and wheel
assembly. Torque the wheel lug nuts to
420 ft-lbs (569.5 Nm).

When replacing a wheel bearing,
both the inner and outer bearings
including the pressed-in races
must be replaced.
Component damage. Do not
apply excessive force or damage
to the lip of the seal may occur.
Always use a new cotter pin when
installing a castle nut.
