Chapter 14. Planning a Large-Scale Post-
Processed Static Survey

Network Design

Large-scale static survey planning consists of two primary
steps:
• Network design
• Observation plan
Following these two steps will greatly increase your chances
of success. Each of these steps is discussed below.
Whether the number of control points to be established in
your static survey is 2 or 20, you should design a network
defining the number and location of observations that will be
required to effectively position the new points.
As an illustration, consider an example where two new
intervisible points are to be established on a project site for
use as control for a boundary survey (see Fig. 1). The two new
points need to be tied to an existing control point three
kilometers (1.9 miles) away.
