SERVICE BRAKE COMPONENTS
The standard service brake system on 1994 BR
truck models consists of power assisted, front disc
and rear drum brakes.
Rear wheel antilock (RWAL) brakes are standard
equipment with an all-wheel antilock (ABS) brake
system available as an option.
Front Disc Brakes
Front disc brakes consist of single piston, floating style
calipers. Brakeshoe lining material is semi metallic. Vented
disc brake rotors are used for all applications.
Three different calipers are used. They are identi
fied by caliper piston size and model application
which are:
• calipers on 1500 models have a 75 mm (2.95 in.) pis
ton
• calipers on 2500 models have an 80 mm (3.1 in.) pis
ton
• calipers on 3500 models and 2500 4 x 4 models
with Dana 60 front axle have an 86 mm (3.385 in.)
piston
Rear Drum Brakes
Rear drum brakes are dual shoe units with an au
tomatic adjustment mechanism. Three different drum
brake assemblies are used:
• 11 x 2 in. rear drum brakes are used on 1/2 ton
models
• 13 x 2.5 in. rear drum brakes are used on 3/4 ton
models
• 13 x 3.5 in. rear drum brakes are used on one-ton
models
Brakelining Material
The brakelining material used for the front disc and
rear drum brakes is asbestos free. Service replace
ment brakelining provided through the Mopar parts
system will also be asbestos free.
Master Cylinder/Power Brake Booster
A two section master cylinder and tandem (dual) di
aphragm, vacuum power brake booster is used for all
applications. Models with the Cummins diesel engine
option are also equipped with a vacuum pump assem
bly to operate the power brake booster.
