How to Check for DTCs with the S C S Mode
(retrieving the flash codes)
W h e n the PCM senses an a b n o r m a l i t y in the input or
output system, the D indicator (A) in the gauge
assembly (B) w i l l usually blink.
B
W h e n the D indicator has been reported o n , connect the
HDS to the DLC (A) (located under the steering c o l u m n
lower cover). T u r n the ignition switch ON (II), f r o m the
SELECT MODE MENU select SCS m o d e or connect the
SCS line (BRN wire) at the DLC (A) to the body g r o u n d
w i t h a j u m p e r w i r e , then the D indicator w i l l indicate
(blink) the DTC.
If the D indicator and the MIL c o m e on at the same t i m e ,
or if a driveability p r o b l e m is suspected, f o l l o w this
procedure:
1. Connect the HDS to the DLC. (Seethe HDS user's
manual for specific instructions.)
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), f r o m the SELECT
MODE M E N U select SCS m o d e , then observe the D
indicator in the gauge assembly.
Code 1 t h r o u g h 9 are indicated by individual short
blinks. Code 10 and above are indicated by a series
of long and short blinks. One long blink equals 10
short blinks. A d d the long and short blinks together
to determine the code.
Example: DTC 1-1

3. Record all fuel and emissions DTCs and A/T DTCs.
If there is a fuel and emissions DTC, first check the
fuel and emissions system as indicated by the DTC
(except DTC 70; DTC 70 means there is one or more
A/T DTCs, and no problems w e r e detected in the
fuel and emissions circuit of the PCM).
Clear the DTC and data.
Drive the vehicle for several minutes under the
same conditions as those indicated by the freeze
data, and then recheck for DTC. If the A/T DTC
returns, go to the DTC Troubleshooting Index. If the
DTC does not return, there w a s an intermittent
p r o b l e m w i t h i n the circuit. Make sure all pins and
terminals in the circuit are tight.
