Restriction on Power Assist Operation
Repeated extreme steering force, such as t u r n i n g the
steering wheel continuously back-and-forth w i t h the
vehicle stopped, causes an increase of power
c o n s u m p t i o n in the EPS motor. The increase of electric
current causes the m o t o r to heat up. Because this heat
adversely affects the system, the control unit monitors
the electric current of the motor.
W h e n the control unit detects heat build-up in the motor,
it reduces the electric current to the motor gradually to
protect the system, and it restricts the power assist
operation. The EPS indicator does not come on during
this function.
W h e n steering torque is not applied to the steering
w h e e l , or w h e n the ignition is turned off and the motor
cools, the control unit w i l l restore the power assist
gradually until it's fully restored (after about 8 minutes).
Torque Sensor Neutral Position
The EPS control unit stores the torque sensor neutral
position in the EEPROM. Memorize the torque sensor
neutral position whenever the gearbox is removed and
installed, or w h e n the torque sensor or EPS control unit
is replaced.
NOTE: The torque sensor neutral position is not
effected w h e n erasing the DTCs.
H o w t o Troubleshoot DTCs
The troubleshooting flowchart procedures assume that
the cause of the problem is still present and the EPS
indicator is still o n . Following the f l o w c h a r t w h e n the
EPS indicator does not come on can result in incorrect
diagnosis.
The connector illustrations show the female terminal
connectors w i t h a single outline and the male t e r m i n a l
connectors w i t h a double outline.
1. Question the customer about the conditions w h e n
the p r o b l e m occured, and try to reproduce the
same conditions for t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g . Find out
w h e n the EPS indicator came o n , such as during
EPS control, after EPS control, w h e n the vehicle
was at a certain speed, etc.
2. W h e n the EPS indicator does not c o m e on during
the test-drive, but troubleshooting is done based on
the DTC, check for loose connectors, poor t e r m i n a l
contact, etc., in the affected circuit before y o u start
t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g .
3. After t r o u b l e s h o o t i n g , clear the DTC and test-drive
the vehicle. Be sure the EPS indicator does not
come o n .
