OPERATION OF NEAX-2400 MCI ADAPTIVE INTEGRATION

MCI (Message Center Interface) is an optional service available on NEC NEAX-2400, IMG, MMG and
UMG PBXs. MCI provides a connection between the NEAX-2400 and the Octelt 200/300. This
connection is in the form of a 1200 baud serial data link. The NEAX-2400 must be equipped with
Message Center Interface.
Calls to unanswered or busy extensions are forwarded via system or station call forwarding to a Octel
200/300 UCD hunt group. The MCI feature provides the Octel 200/300 with the forwarded extension
number and the condition upon which it was forwarded.

Figure 5-1 is a block diagram showing the Octel 200/300, the NEAX-2400, and the connections between
the two. For integration via MCI, an additional serial link is required. This 1200 baud serial data link
provides information to the Octel 200/300 regarding calls that have been forwarded to Octel 200/300
ports. In addition, the Octel 200/300 can activate and deactivate message waiting indication via this link.
.
If a customer has a NEAX-2400 PBX and is interested in using MCI, ask the PBX vendor if MCI
is available and at what cost. As of this publication date, the feature to support MCI service is
available on the NEAX-2400 IMG, MMG, and UMG. However, even if the switch is a
NEAX-2400 IMG, MMG, or UMG, MCI support may not be available with that particular
software release. For full functionality of the integration, software release level 5200 is required.
Message Waiting Indication. MCI tells the NEAX-2400 to provide message waiting indication
(MWI) in the form of a lamp or MW display that can be activated by the Octel 200/300 (for mailboxes
with a COS containing Attribute 9).
When the first new message is received in a mailbox, the Octel 200/300 sends information to the
NEAX-2400 to activate the MWI. When the MWI is activated, the lamp is lit. If the station is a Dterm V
or Dterm X, the following shows on the display:
This indicates that a message is waiting to be listened to. When the mailbox is accessed, the Octel
200/300 sends information back to the NEAX-2400 to turn OFF the MWI, even if the messages are not
listened to and erased.
