Checking the Battery Terminals

When the Battery Goes Flat
1. Check the specific gravity of the
battery fluid using a hydrometer. If
the specific gravity is too low, the
battery should be charged.
Specific gravity at a fluid temperature of
20°C (68°F)
1.27 - 1.29
1. Check the terminals for looseness
and corrosion.
2. If a terminal is found to be corroded
and coated in white powder, wash
this away with warm water and then
wipe fully dry. Excessively corroded
terminals should be polished using a
wire brush or sandpaper.
3. When you have finished cleaning the
terminals, apply a thin layer of grease
and securely connect the battery
cables, taking care to ensure that they
are tight.

the battery be completely discharged.
Tightening torque for terminal nuts
5 - 7 N·m (0.5 - 0.7 kgf·m/43 - 61 lb·in)
