This check can
be
carried ou t, if required in
case
of
a seemingly abnormal tight spot or play,
using
"PERFEC
T
CIRCLE
PLASTIGAGE"
pl
astic
gauges.
Plays between .025 mm and .075 mm can be
checked
with green PG 1 type gauges.
Shaft alignment play must fall bet11een
.039
and
.077 mm.
Connecting
rod
play must
fall
between
.028
and
.
062 mm.

Procedure for checking plays
-
Dip a length of "Perfect
Circle" pl
as

wire
In
hot
water to soften it, and fit
i
t
on
each
crankshaft journal or crankpin
to
be checked,
in the directi
on
of the
cra·nkshaft
centre-1 i ne.
- Re-fit cap screws, remove caps,
and
compare
wi dth
of
crushed
wire
wf
th graduated scale used
for packi ng
(Fig.
17)
.
Important: this check must be
carri
ed
out
without oil being present; afterwards,
fragments
of crushed
wire
must be removed, an
d
journals and crankpins must
be
wi
ped
over again.
-Smear each crankshaft bearing
with
oil.
-Re-fit caps, and tighten cap screws to torque.

SIDE PLAY
For these checking operations, use
a magnetic
base
comparator:
- Tum cylinder
bl
ock over vert!

and place
comparator feeler to rest against
end
of crankshaft.
• With
a
large
screw driver inserted between a crank-
shaft
bearing
and a crankshaft web, cause
longitudinal
play
of crankshaft (Fig. 18).
Crankshaft
play
must fall between .09 and .27

Note: This operation may, If necessary, be carried
out using a set of spacers (Fig. 19).
