REMOVING AND RE
-
FITTING THE TIMING GEAR COVER
TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN OR
A4tY
THE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER

REMOVAL OPERA TI OOS
- Remove cylinder head (see Section A 3)
.
- Disconnect thenno-swltch on radiator, and
remove radiator with Its

hoses.
- Remove fan.
- Disconnect a ltemator

- Remove alternator tie-rod on ti•ing gear cover,
loosen other end, then re.ove alternator.
Remove belt.

Loosen crankshaft pulley (with hand-brake
applied, and vehicle In 4th gear), and extract
pu

ey.
- Remove tfaf ng gear cover setscrews fl tted In
upper sect! on •.
- Raise lifting ramp, and remove remaining screws
fro11 lower section.
- Remove 6 screws fastening ofl sump to timing
gear cover, and 1 oosen a

other sc raws as
access Is available.
- Detach o!l suap and remove ti
1!
ng gear cover;
the operator then has access to the autoJJatfc
adjuster.
To replace a timing gear chain or an oil pump
chain It Is first necessary to drain the ofl
sump, and to remove It, so that the oil puap
can be removed.
Both chat ns can then be removed easfl
y.
RE-FITTING OPERATIONS
- Check condition of oil sump gasket and replace It
If necessary.
- Clean timing gear cover }oint planes.
- Use grease to fit paper gasket on cylinder block,
re-fit and fasten cover to cylinder block, and
tighten to torque.
- Re-f! t oil sump to tf•ing gear cover, without
omitting the retainers, and tighten all screws
wh Ich had be.en loosened at the
re~~ova
1 stage.
- Re-fit crankshaft pulley, and tighten to torque.
- Check position of T.D.C.
- Re-ftt alternator and tts tie-rod, re-fft and
tighten
belt.
• Re-fit fan.
- Re-fit radf a tor wf th Its 2 hoses.
Re-f! t cylinder head (see Section A 3).
