THE
AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
-
Set
car on a
lifting ramp;
place a
wide
opening vessel under oil sump.
- Loosen oil sump
screws,
open
sump
slightly
at
one corner to
al1o~:~
oil
to run out, then remove
sump.
- If necessary, fi{
a
new filter, in lower
section
of valve
box, and
tighten
setscrews.
- If neces
sa
ry,
ad
just reverse band.
-
Clean
sump
,
and
re-fit it, using a new
gasket.
-Pour Dexron
Auto~
at
ic
Fluid in filter tube.
- Stort
engine, and
al
low it to idle
ford
least
2 n;inutes;
then,
with
hand-brake
applied, move
manual selector lever
momentarily
towards
each position
to
finish
with
theneutral
position.
-
Top
up
oi
l l evel.
-
Check
l evel
aga
in
when
transmi
ss
ion is at
normal op
era
ting tempcratu re.
DIAGNOSIS
A
s
no repair
operation
is,at pres ent,
allowed on
the
automa
tic transr.li
ssion
,
with
the exception
of
the operations
indicated
under chapter
F4/VII,
operators
must
distinguish
between
the faults
resu
lting
from:
a poor adjustment,
• th
e
torque converter,
the
automatic
gear box.
Checking the
brake engine
speed
provides a
promp
t
diagnosis
of
those faults
wh
ich are
attributable
either to the
torque
converter
or to the
gear
box
.
Prior to
r emoving the
gear
box-
converter
assemb
l
y
,
it is essential
that
the following should
b
e che
cked:
• gear
box oil
l evel,
• engine
setting,
kick down linkage
adju stment,
• adjustme:r1t
of
s
e
l
e
ction
system
,
adjustment
of bands,
brake
engine speed.

Brake engine speed
Caution:
during this test, there should
be
no
one
in
front
of the car.
The
brake test consists
in
finding out
the
engine
speed
as
obtained in D position with throttle wide
open.
This
test
is
designed to check
the correct
op
era
tion of the
converter
reactor,
and of
t
he
gear box
clutches.
Before
this
test,
check
oil level,
and bring
engine to its nonnal op erating temperature.
Apply
vehicle brakes.
Do not
pursue
test
beyond t
ime
required
to
obtain
the
r esult, nor, in
any
case, beyond
5
seconds
per test.
If the test must be r
epea
ted, run
engine for 20
seconds at
1000 r.p.
m
,
in neutral,
to cool
transmission down.
If engine speed exceeds the
maximum
1
imi
t,
r ei
ease
acc el
erato
r immedi
ate
ly,
for
th
e
clutc hes
are
slipping.
The
acceptable
brake engine speed is
between 1900
and 22u0
r.p.m.
Brake speed
higher
than
standard
If
brake
engine
speed
is higher
than
the standard
speed by more
than
200
r.p.
m
., the
clutches
are
slipping.
This fault cal

test
is,
then, necessary,

trace
the
exact

r.r.m.,
and if
the
veh
icl
e
r
uns
normally
on
the
road,
but with weak
acceleration,
this
shows the
reactor
free
w heel
is
slipping
Brake engine

r.p.m.
If
speed
and
acceleration
ar
e
norrr. al,
but
car
speed
i
s limited
to approximately
110
km/h,
t
he
r eactor
f
r
ee
wheel
is
seizing
Both faul
ts
call for the replacement
of
t he torque
converter •
