Testing the Charging System

Electrical System: Electrical System Quick Checks
This is a simple test that determines if a charging system is functioning. It tells
you if the charging system has an output, but not its capacity.
Tool required: Digital multimeter to set DC volts.
Test instructions: Connect the positive (+) multimeter lead to the positive
battery post and negative (-) multimeter lead to the negative battery post. Keep
the test leads connected to the battery posts and record the battery voltage.
Note: When starting the engine, the battery voltage drops and then must
increase once the engine is running.
Note: Depending upon the condition of the battery charge and battery
temperature, the battery voltage increases at different rates as the battery
charges.
Start the engine and run it at high-idle speed. Allow the battery to charge for a
minimum time of 3 minutes. Record the battery voltage.
Note: After running the engine for a minimum time of 3 minutes, the battery
voltage must be minimum 0.50 V higher than that of the initial battery voltage.
Refer to the
Battery Voltage Table (page 6–4)
system that is functioning.
