b. Bearing retainer wrench: part No. YM-33214
or 90890-04077.
c. Crankshaft installer bolt adapter: part No.
YM-90069 or 90890-91277.
d. Armature shock puller (slide hammer): part
No. YU- 1047-3 or 90890-01290.

2. Remove the drive shaft from the final gearcase
as described in this chapter.
3. Working in a criss-cross pattern, evenly loosen
the nuts (A, Figure 32) and bolts (B) on the bearing
housing. Once all the hardware is loose, remove the
nuts and bolts.
4. Remove the bearing housing and the O-ring.
5. Remove the ring gear shim(s). Note the number
of shims.
6. Remove the ring gear assembly and remove the
thrust washer.
CAUTION
The pinion gear assembly should only
be removed during ring gear replace
ment.
7. Hold the gear coupling with the Yamaha gear
coupling/shaft holder (Figure 34) and remove the
pinion gear nut along with its washer. Discard the
self-locking pinion gear nut. A new nut must be in-
stalled during assembly.
8. Remove the gear coupling.
NOTE
The bearing retainer has left hand
threads. Turn the nut clockwise to re
move it.
9. Use the Yamaha bearing retainer wrench (Fig-
ure 35) to remove the bearing retainer.
10. Use the crankshaft installer bolt adapter (A,
Figure 36), armature shock puller (B) and the
weight (C) to remove the pinion gear. Assemble the
tools according to their instructions and remove the
pinion gear. Discard the bearing inner race. A new
one must be installed during assembly.
11. Replace the pinion gear bearing as described in
Gearcase Bearing Replacement in this chapter.

Final Gearcase Assembly

NOTE
The pinion and ring gears must be
aligned whenever the final gearcase
or any bearing is replaced. Refer to
Pinion Gear/Ring Gear Alignment
and select new shims if the gearcase
or a bearing has been replaced.
1. Install the pinion gear shims into the gearcase.
2. Install the pinion gear assembly. Make sure the
bearing inner race is in place on the inboard end of
the pinion gear.
NOTE
The bearing retainer has left hand
threads. Turn it counterclockwise to
tighten it.
