in the hole with the small O-ring. See A, Fig-
ure 30 and B, Figure 28. Torque the oil filter
outer cover bolts to 10 N•m (89 in.-lb.).
9. Remove the oil filler cap (D, Figure 9) and in-
sert a funnel into the oil filler hole. Fill the crank-
case with the correct weight and quantity of oil
(Table 4). Screw on the oil filler cap securely.
10. Check the oil pressure as follows:
a. Slightly loosen the intake rocker arm shaft
bolt on the rear cylinder.
b. Start the engine and let it idle. Oil should seep
from the loosened rocker arm bolt. If it does
not do so within one minute, turn the engine
off and inspect the oil lines, oil filter and oil
pump for damage.
c. Turn the engine off and torque the rocker arm
bolt to 38 N•m (28 ft.-lb.).
11. Check for oil leaks. Once the oil has settled,
check the oil level in the sight glass (A, Figure 9)
on the alternator cover. Adjust the oil level if neces-
sary.
12. Reinstall the front exhaust pipe and the muf-
flers as described in Chapter Eight.
FUEL AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS

Inspect the condition of all fuel lines for cracks or

loose connections or damage. Refer to Chapter
Eight.

Carburetor Synchronization

Synchronizing the carburetors makes sure one
cylinder does not try to run faster than the other, cut-
ting power and gas mileage. The only accurate way
to synchronize the carburetors is to measure the in-
take vacuum of both cylinders at the same time with
a set of gauges (Figure 32).
NOTE
Before synchronizing the carburetors,
check the engine idle speed and valve
clearances. Both must be within spec
ification.
1. Securely support the motorcycle on a level sur-
face.
2. Remove the rider and passenger seats as de-
scribed in Chapter Fourteen.
3. Remove the fuel tank, air filter housing and
surge tank (Chapter Eight).
