oils are designed specifically for au
tomotive applications. The additives
added to these oils may cause engine
and/or clutch damage in motorcycle
applications.
NOTE
Never dispose of engine oil in the
trash, on the ground or down a
storm drain. Many service stations
and oil retailers accept used oil for
recycling. Do not combine other flu
ids with engine oil for recycling. To
locate a recycler, contact the Ameri
can Petroleum Institute (API) at
www.recycleoil.org.
1. Start the engine and run it until it reaches normal
operating temperature, then turn the engine off.
2. Securely support the bike on a level surface.
3. Place a drain pan under the crankcase, and re-
move the oil drain bolt (Figure 26) from the left
side of the crankcase.
4. Let the oil drain for at least 15-20 minutes.
5. Inspect the sealing washer on the crankcase
drain plug. Replace the washer if its condition is in
doubt.
6. Install the oil drain bolt and washer. Torque the
bolt to 43 N•m (32 ft.-lb.).
WARNING
The exhaust pipes will be hot! Wear
thick work gloves when removing the
exhaust pipes.
7. Replace the oil filter (6, Figure 27) as follows:
a. Remove the mufflers and front exhaust pipe
as described in Chapter Eight.
NOTE
The emblem does not have to be re
moved when the oil filter is changed.
a. Remove the outer cover bolts (A and B, Figure
28) and remove the outer cover (C) from the
clutch cover. Note that the shouldered bolt is in-
stalled in the lower cover hole (B, Figure 28). It
must be reinstalled here during assembly.
b. Remove the oil filter cap (Figure 29). Watch
for the O-ring (A, Figure 30) in the lower
mount.
c. Remove the oil filter (B, Figure 30) from the
oil filter cavity.
d. Apply fresh oil to the grommet on a new oil
filter and install the filter so the end with the
grommet faces out as shown in Figure 31.
e. Check the O-rings for tears or brittleness. Re-
place them as necessary.
f. Apply fresh engine oil to the two O-rings on
the oil filter cap (C, Figure 30) and the small
O-ring in the lower mount (A).
g. Install the oil filter cap so its oil delivery hole
(D, Figure 30) faces up.
h. Install the oil filter outer cover (C, Figure
28). Install the shouldered bolt (B, Figure 28)
