8. Install first gear (Figure 30) so its flat side faces
out.
9. Install the middle drive gear (Figure 23) so its
splines engage those on the countershaft.
10. Mesh both assembled transmission shafts to-
gether with the middle driven gear (Figure 31).
Make sure all gears mate properly.

Transmission Inspection

1. Clean all parts in cleaning solvent and dry them
thoroughly.
NOTE
Any defective gear should be re
placed. It is also a good idea to re
place the gear's mate from the
opposite shaft, even though the mate
may not show as much wear or dam
age. Worn parts usually cause accel
erated wear on new parts. Replace
gears in sets to ensure proper mating
and wear.
2. Visually inspect the gears for cracks or chips as
well as for broken or burnt teeth (Figure 32).
3. Check the engagement dogs (A, Figure 33) and
engagement slots (Figure 34). Replace any gear(s)
with rounded or damaged edges on the dogs or
within the slots.
4. Inspect all free-wheeling gear bearing surfaces
(B, Figure 33) for wear, discoloration and galling.
Also inspect the respective shaft's bearing surfaces
(A, Figure 24). If there is any metal flaking or vi-
sual damage, replace both parts.
5. Inspect the splines (B, Figure 24) on each shaft
for wear or discoloration. Also check the internal
splines (Figure 32) on the sliding gears and the

middle driven gear (A, Figure 35). If no visual
damage is apparent, install each gear onto its re-
spective shaft and work the gear back and forth to
make sure it moves smoothly.
6. Make sure any oil hole (A, Figure 36) in a gear
or shaft (C, Figure 24) is clear.
