3. Remove the ring gear shim(s). Note the number
of shims.
4. Remove the ring gear assembly and remove the
thrust washer.
5. Ring gear shims and thrust washers are available
in several sizes. See Figure 33.
6. Adjust gear lash by adding or removing ring
gear shims as necessary to increase or decrease the
gear lash. If the gear lash is less than specified, re-
duce ring gear shim thickness. If the gear lash ex-
ceeds specification, increase ring gear shim
thickness.
a. If the ring gear shim thickness is increased by
more than 0.2 mm, reduce thrust washer
thickness by 0.2 mm for each 0.2 mm increase
in ring gear shim thickness.
b. If the ring gear shim thickness decreases by
more than 0.2 mm, increase thrust washer
thickness 0.2 mm for each 0.2 mm decrease in
ring gear shim thickness.
7. Reassemble the ring gear and bearing housing
by reversing the disassembly procedures. Note the
following:

a. Pack the lips of the oil seal with lithium soap
b. Evenly tighten the bearing housing nuts (A,

Final Gearcase Disassembly

Disassembly of the final gearcase assembly (Fig-
ure 28) requires considerable expertise as well as a
number of Yamaha special tools. If the final
gearcase requires service, general practice is to
have the service performed by a Yamaha dealership
or other qualified motorcycle shop.
1. The following tools, or their equivalents, are
needed to disassemble and reassemble the final gear
assembly:
a. Gear

Figure 32) and bolts (B) in a criss-cross pat-
tern. Apply a medium-strength threadlocking
compound to the threads of the bearing hous-
ing bolts (B, Figure 32). Torque the nuts to 23
N•m (17 ft.-lb.). Torque the bolts to 40 N•m
(30 ft.-lb.).
