the clearance. If the side clearance is still outside the
specified range, replace the crankshaft.
9. Use V-blocks and a dial gauge to check the
crankshaft runout (Figure 96). If the runout ex-
ceeds the specification in Table 1, replace the
crankshaft.
CONNECTING RODS
Removal/Installation
NOTE
The connecting rods can be serviced
while the crankshaft is installed in the
left case half. Crankshaft removal is
not necessary.
1. Split the crankcase as described in this chapter.
2. Check the big end slide clearance if it has not
been checked. Slide the connecting rods to one side.
Measure the connecting rod big end side clearance
(Figure 95) with a flat feeler gauge. If the clearance
is outside the range specified in Table 1, replace the
connecting rods and recheck the clearance. If the
side clearance is still outside the specified range, re-
place the crankshaft.
CAUTION
Prior to disassembly, mark each con
necting rod and cap with an F (Front)
or R (rear) so the rods can be in
stalled in their original locations.
3. Remove the connecting rod cap nuts (Figure 97)
and separate the rods from the crankshaft.
CAUTION
Keep each bearing insert (A, Figure
98) in its original place in the con
necting rod or rod cap. If bearing in
serts are going to be reused, they must
be installed in their original loca
tions, or rapid wear will occur.
4. Mark each rod cap and bearing so they can be re-
installed in their original locations. Make sure the
weight mark on the end of the cap matches the mark
on the rod (Figure 99).
5. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the
following:
a. Install the bearing insert (A, Figure 98) into
each connecting rod and cap. Make sure the
