Piston Ring Installation

When installing any ring, liberally lu
bricate the ring and piston groove
with clean engine oil.
1. Install the oil control ring assembly into the bot-
tom ring groove. Install the oil ring expander spacer
first (A, Figure 136), then install each ring rail (B).
Make sure the ends of the expander spacer butt to-
CORRECT
gether (Figure 137). They should not overlap.
When reassembling used parts, install the ring rails
as they were removed.
2. Install the second compression ring, then install
the top ring. Carefully spread the ends of each ring
with your thumbs and slip the ring over the top of
the piston (Figure 129). Install each compression
ring with its manufacturing marks (Figure 138)
facing up.
3. Make sure the rings are seated completely in
their grooves all the way around the piston and the
ends are distributed around the piston.
4. Check the side clearance of each ring as shown
in Figure 134. If the side clearance is not within the
specification shown in Table 2, re-examine the con-
dition of the piston and rings.
5. Distribute the ring gaps around the piston as
shown in Figure 139.
6. Follow the break-in procedure in Chapter Five if
a new piston or new piston rings have been in-
stalled, or if the cylinder was honed.
