*Consider this maintenance schedule a guide to general maintenance and lubrication intervals. Service these
items more frequently if the motorcycle is exposed to mud, water, sand or high humidity, or if it is run harder
than normal (stop-and-go traffic for example).
Check the valve clearance; adjust as necessary
Check the condition of the spark plugs;
clean and adjust the gap as necessary
Check the crankcase ventilation hose for cracks
or damage; replace as necessary
Check the fuel lines for cracks or damage; replace as necessary
Check carburetor synchronization; adjust as necessary
Check the exhaust system for leaks
Retighten hardware and/or replace gaskets as necessary
Check the engine idle speed and throttle free play;
adjust either as necessary
Change engine oil and filter
Clean the air filter; replace if damaged
Check the operation of the front and rear brakes;
replace the pads if necessary
Check brake fluid level in the master cylinders;
adjust as necessary
Check clutch operation; adjust the cable free play
or replace the cable as necessary.
Lubricate all control and meter cables
Lubricate the brake and clutch lever pivot shafts
with lithium soap grease
Lubricate the brake pedal and shift pedal pivot shafts
with lithium soap grease
Check the operation of the sidestand
Lightly lubricate the sidestand pivot and contact surfaces
with lithium soap grease
Check the operation of the sidestand switch; replace if necessary
Check the operation of the front fork and check for leaks
Check the steering head bearings for smoothness
or excessive play; adjust as necessary
Check the operation of the shock absorber and check for leaks
Check the wheel bearings for wear or damage;
replace if necessary
Check the wheels for runout and balance; adjust as necessary
Check the spoke tightness; adjust as necessary
Check tire tread for wear or damage; replace as necessary
Check all fasteners; tighten them as necessary
Perform the 4000 mile (7000 km) checks
Replace the spark plugs
Check the final gear oil; adjust the level as necessary
